Step 1: register your address (Anmeldung) in Hamburg
- Deadline: within 2 weeks of moving in.
- Where: a customer service centre (Kundenzentrum); choose the service area "Einwohnerwesen" when booking online.
- Appointment: most centres are busy, so University of Hamburg advises booking before you arrive.
- Bring: the registration form, landlord confirmation and your passport. The booking confirmation email lists the documents again.
After registering you receive the registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung); your tax ID and a broadcasting fee letter follow by post.
Step 2: residence permit in Hamburg
Office: Amt für Migration, City of Hamburg (online service "Aufenthaltserlaubnis Hamburg").
- How: the online service checks eligibility, collects your data and documents, and submits the application.
- Timing: processing usually takes several weeks after you submit.
- Fee: the online service is free; the permit itself costs about €100.
Apply before your visa expires and keep proof that you did. Under § 81 (4) of the Residence Act, a timely application generally keeps your stay lawful until the office decides; ask for a provisional certificate (Fiktionsbescheinigung) if you need proof.
