Short answer: the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is a short form in which the person who gives you your home confirms that you moved in. You need it to register your address (Anmeldung) within two weeks. Your landlord, or the main tenant if you sublet a room in a shared flat, is legally required to give it to you (§ 19 Federal Registration Act).

What it contains

  • Name and address of the Wohnungsgeber (the landlord, or the main tenant who sublets to you), and of the owner if different
  • Your move-in date
  • The address of the flat
  • The names of the people moving in

Most cities publish the form on their website; any version with this information works. Some landlords can also send it to the city electronically.

Who signs it in a shared flat?

Whoever gives you the room. If you rent from the owner or a housing company, they sign. If you sublet from the main tenant (Hauptmieter), the main tenant can sign as your Wohnungsgeber.

If your landlord won't give it

  • Ask in writing with a date, using our German email template.
  • Refusing is an administrative offence for the landlord, and the citizens' office can contact them. Tell the office at your appointment; some cities accept a written explanation from you (Munich does, for example).
  • Don't let the problem stop you from registering in time: the two-week deadline is yours.

Warning: never buy an address

Offering or using a confirmation for a flat you don't really live in is illegal and can be fined heavily. Offers of "Anmeldung addresses" in online groups are a scam risk and can cost you your residence permit.
